Description
On December 7, 2022, Miguel Alejandro Martínez waited until his coworker, José Jaharí Sofiudin, had fallen asleep during a break at the bakery before throwing a bucket of boiling grease (about 100 °C) in his face and onto his torso. The victim, aged 47, suffered severe burns and was in agony for 17 days in the hospital before dying of multiple organ failure.
The court found him guilty of aggravated murder with malice aforethought, considering that the assailant took advantage of the victim’s defenseless state while he was asleep.
Although possible workplace jealousy or prior arguments were mentioned, no cause was proven that would justify such a level of violence.
Martínez was sentenced to life in prison in February 2026 for the murder.
