Do not redeem the rod
We have an old saying..."Spare the rod, and spoil the child..." 
which originally meant that, not punishing kids, risks them becoming spoiled brats) But anyway, kids will do anything to gain some attention... Made worse by the fact that in shithole countries, house owners purposely leave rebar rods standing out of their top floor/roof area, as a way of avoiding the tax on completed buildings as it looks like it is still under construction.
