The 2012 Iraq emo killings consisted of a wave of targeted intimidation, kidnappings, and murders that took place in early 2012 and were directed against Iraqi teenagers and young adults associated with the “emo” subculture, on the grounds of alleged homosexuality and devil worship.

In several locations, primarily in Baghdad (such as Sadr City, Kadhimiya, and al-Mansour) and other urban areas like Mosul, during February and March, young people wearing Western-style emo clothing, tight jeans, or sporting long or spiked hair, as well as those suspected of being gay or nonconformists, were subjected to beatings, attacks with concrete blocks, stonings, shootings, and the distribution of hit-list leaflets by militias.

Estimates varied considerably, ranging from a minimum of 12 documented by the United Nations to figures provided by local authorities and the media, which ranged from 14 to more than 50–70 deaths, although these were difficult to verify.
