(Reuters) – The United Nations reported on Saturday that more than 92 people were killed in what activists said was an artillery bombardment by government forces, in the worst episode of violence since the start of the UN peace plan to halt the bloodshed in the Syrian uprising.
“The bloodied bodies of children, some with their skulls split open, appeared in a video posted on YouTube purporting to show victims of Friday’s shelling in the central town of Houla. The sound of wailing filled the room.”
The massacre highlighted how far Syria is from any negotiated way out of the 14-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

This morning, UN military and civilian observers traveled to Houla and counted more than 32 children under the age of 10 and more than 60 adults dead," said the head of the UN team monitoring the ceasefire, which has not yet been consolidated.
The observers confirmed, after examining the shells, the use of heavy artillery," General Robert Mood said in a statement, without giving further details. "Whoever initiated, responded to, and carried out this deplorable act of violence must be held accountable."

Activists said Assad's forces bombarded the town of Houla on Friday night after security forces killed a protester and following clashes between troops and Sunni insurgents fighting the Alawite minority rulers of Syria.

Syrian state television broadcast some of the images released by activists after the Houla massacre, describing the bodies as victims of a massacre committed by "terrorist" gangs.
It also showed a video of bodies with what appeared to be gunshot wounds to the head, lying on bloodstained mattresses.
