Description
The Algerian War (1954–1962) was a brutal eight-year conflict between France and Algeria’s National Liberation Front (FLN), which ultimately led to Algeria’s independence. Characterized by guerrilla warfare, terrorism, and widespread torture on both sides, the war claimed a large number of lives, caused the collapse of the Fourth French Republic, and led to a mass exodus of “pied-noirs” (European settlers).
Approximately one million Algerians lost their lives. Between 800,000 and 900,000 pieds-noirs fled to France, and many “harkis” (Algerian Muslims who fought on the French side) also emigrated with them.
