Russian troops have shot and killed 10 people as they queued up to buy bread in the Ukrainian city of Chernihiv, American officials have said.

The US embassy in Kyiv described the attack as “horrific”.

“Today, Russian forces shot and killed 10 people standing in line for bread in Chernihiv,” the embassy said in a tweet.

"Such horrific attacks must stop. We are considering all available options to ensure accountability for any atrocity crimes in Ukraine.”

Thousands of civilians have been killed in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with residential buildings, hospitals and schools among those hit by Kremlin airstrikes.

Yesterday, hundreds of people were taken hostage by Russian troops in a hospital, in the city of Mariupol. They are thought to still be trapped inside.

According to regional leader Pavlo Kyrylenko, the forces drove 400 people from nearby houses into Regional Intensive Care Hospital, joining around 100 doctors and patients inside.

Mr Kyrylenko said that troops were using those trapped inside the hospital as human shields and barring them from leaving.

Despite heavy shelling on the main hospital, he said staff were continuing to treat patients on makeshift wards in the basement.

Today’s attack comes as peace talks continue between Russia and Ukraine, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky saying that Russia’s demands were beginning to sound “more realistic”.

British officials said yesterday that Russian troops had failed to make advances in cities such as Chernihiv, with a briefing revealing that “almost all” of Moscow’s assaults have failed to make any progress.
