NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- Chilling new video shows the moments of the dreadful hit-and-run in Newark that killed two women.

The tragedy happened around 11 p.m. on Saturday night at Park Avenue and North 7th Street.

Authorities said the driver did not stop after the crash and instead fled the scene, heading north on North 7th Street. Police are still searching for the driver.

Mariana Elizabeth Valverde Beltran, 58, of Elizabeth and Maria Isabel DeLosAngeles Salgado Ayala, 61, of Newark, were both pronounced dead.

Video shows the reaction of witnesses in horror and disbelief just seconds after the two friends who had just been at a World Cup watch party were hit.

The car went barreling through the intersection and the two were thrown airborne.

"The light was changing, this side was red, this side was yellow, I don't know if he was drunk, but anyway he put the gas and that's what happens," a witness Manuel Candelaria said.

After the driver of what appeared to be a red sedan slammed into the two women, the driver kept going.

First responders at a firehouse just yards away rushed over to try to help them.

"You have to live with this for the rest of your life. I hope the person is found but also for that person it's something you have to live with for the rest of your life, it's on your conscience," Jeffrey Chacon, Beltran's cousin, said.

People who live nearby say speeding is an ongoing issue at a couple of the intersections along Park Avenue.

"It's very dangerous I usually wait a few seconds even if it turns red, because they speed right through," Newark resident Judite said.

Now two families have the gut-wrenching burden of breaking the news to relatives.

"My dad is managing his emotions with trying to contact everyone in Ecuador, her sisters, her son," Chacon said.
