Taipei, Oct. 24 (CNA) A multiple vehicle pileup in a tunnel on the main highway connecting Yilan and Hualien counties left one dead and 11 injured on Tuesday.
According to local authorities, a 76-year-old driver, identified only by his last name Chang (張), was pronounced dead by the Su'ao branch of the Taipei Veterans General Hospital at 4:10 p.m.
Among the injured was a 58-year-old motorcycle rider who suffered an open fracture to his right ankle, while others were treated for abrasions, authorities said.
The cause of the accident, which occurred at around 1 p.m. on the northbound lanes of the Xin'ao Tunnel on Provincial Highway No. 9, is currently being investigated by the police.
The accident involved 17 vehicles, some of which were heavy-duty trucks.
