In two thousand fourteen Asian swine influenza spread and killed five million pigs in The United States of America. It was seemingly under control. Then in two thousand eighteen Asian swine influenza and African swine fever decimated the pig population. Thirty percent, or more, of the world's pig population died. It's still an issue. Asian swine influenza and African swine fever can't harm people from eating infected pigs but it has a nearly one hundred percent fatality rate for pigs. It's extremely easy to pass on and kills pigs quickly. To answer your question, they burn them to kill the virus and prevent infected pigs from spreading it. The first time this happened, they rushed all the infected pigs to the slaughter house so they didn't loose money. What ended up happening was they spread the virus faster. So way more pigs died. They're trying to prevent spreading, so they don't sell infected pigs. But you can safely eat the pork if my understanding is accurate. I'm almost certain it is. A person can get swine influenza through contact with infected pigs but it's not likely to kill someone.
