Officer Benito Javier Báez Figueredo, 39, was attacked by a man who shot him without saying a word and then fled, Commissioner Pablo Benítez reported in communication with Última Hora.

The crime occurred around 6:00 p.m. this Sunday, in the vicinity of the field called Siembra, located between 38 Proyectadas and Cantalupi streets, Cateura area of Bañado Sur, outskirts of Asunción.

The officer—nicknamed “Gatillo”—accused two gunshots, one of them at head height, according to preliminary data.

The witnesses indicated that the police officer and his wife went to the field with his niece, who was playing a women's soccer game, to leave her a key.

When he was heading to his vehicle he was attacked by the man, whose further information is unknown.

The officer was taken to the Barrio Obrero Hospital, where his death was confirmed.

The victim was working at the 8th Police Station in Asunción, but this Sunday he was on his day off.

In the area where the crime occurred, there is a dispute over the control of microtrafficking between the Ríos and Ledesma families, who keep the residents of the peripheral area of Asunción in suspense.
