At least two policemen were killed and several more people were injured in an attack on Sunday in the northern Israeli city of Hadera, police said, an action claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group.

Dudu Boani, number two of the police in this region, indicated that the deceased were two policemen and that the special forces had killed the assailants, whose identity is still unknown.

"Two members of the Border Police anti-terrorist units who were in a restaurant near the scene of the attack came out and neutralized the attackers," an Israeli security source told AFP.

The attack was claimed by the IS jihadist group, in a statement released by the Amaq propaganda site.

"Two members of the (Israeli) Jewish police were killed and others wounded in an immersive commando attack," IS said in the statement, noting that two of its fighters carried out the shooting in Hadera on Sunday.

According to the SITE intelligence group, it is the first time since 2017 that IS has officially claimed responsibility for an attack inside Israel.

Surveillance camera footage from Hadera, located between the cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa, showed two men shooting with automatic weapons in a street. An AFP reporter at the scene could see a body lying on the ground.

Shortly after the attack, security forces were inspecting areas of Umm al-Fahm, an Arab town some 20 kilometers from Hadera, witnesses said.

In different statements, the armed Palestinian Islamist movements of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad applauded "the heroic operation of Hadera", without however claiming responsibility for the attack.
