There was an incident years ago, I think in China. A dead whale washed up on a beach and they loaded it onto a truck to take it somewhere away from the tourist areas. As they drove the truck through the city the whale exploded, much more violently than this one. Made a huge stinking mess.

A 'whale fall' as it's called, can become a sort of transient ecosystem at the bottom of the ocean, the carcass ends up feeding critters down there for up to fifty years. Even osedax worms consume the bones. It's pretty cool to see.
