AGRA: A 32-year-old Delhi-based passenger, Harikesh Kumar Dubey, travelling on the '12876' Neelachal Express died on his seat after a five-foot long and 1.5-inch thick iron rod pierced through his neck after shattering the moving train's window and entering through the compartment.

The freak accident occurred around 8:45am on Friday when the train was running between Danwar (Bulandshahr) and Somna (Aligarh) railway station in the Prayagraj division of the North Central Railways in UP. The train was cruising at a speed of around 130 kmph, said a railway official.
It is still being investigated how exactly the deadly piece of iron came flying through the train's window. NCR spokesperson Himanshu Shekhar said, "A man died in a general coach after being struck by an external object (iron rod). He was sitting by the window in the coach next to the engine when the rod pierced his neck. The train was later stopped at Aligarh junction at 9.23am. The matter is being investigated in detail by a joint team of the railway protection force (RPF) and government railway police (GRP)."
Assistant security commissioner of RPF, Surendra Pratap Singh, meanwhile, said, "There could have been more fatalities... It was a lucky escape for other passengers. The passenger's body has been sent for postmortem." GRP station house officer (Aligarh junction), Subodh Yadav, added, "On the basis of the complaint received from the family of the dead passenger, an FIR has been registered against unknown railway workers for negligence. The case has been registered under IPC section 304-A (causing death by negligence). Primary investigation revealed that track-related work was carried out in the area where the incident took place."

According to Dubey's family, he along with his wife Shalini Dubey and two children -- seven-year-old daughter and a four-year-old son -- were living in Soniya Vihar suburb of north-east Delhi for more than eight years. After being jobless for over a year due to the pandemic, he recently started working as a tower technician at a private firm.
His sister Babita Tripathi said, "He was the youngest among eight siblings, including four sisters. His birthday was on December 5 and we were planning to celebrate it. We lost him forever due to the railways' negligence."
