A man suspected of shoplifting at a supermarket attempted to flee from a security guard, crossed an avenue, and was struck by a bus in Vitória. It was a series of disastrous decisions that left him in critical condition.

On Wednesday night (the 7th), on Elías Miguel Avenue in the Vila Rubim neighborhood of Vitória (ES), a 39-year-old man suspected of stealing items from a supermarket tried to escape a security guard and ended up being hit by a bus. The escape attempt—which likely seemed like it would involve only a brief run—ended with the suspect intubated and in critical condition.

Footage shows the man crossing the avenue, being struck by an object while on the sidewalk, and then—as he attempted to cross the street again—falling and being hit by the bus. In a matter of seconds, the situation shifted from an alleged theft to a medical emergency.

According to a Military Police officer who responded to the scene, the man allegedly tried to steal products from the supermarket but was stopped by the security guard and fled.

The bus driver told the Military Police that the man had stepped into the crosswalk without warning while the traffic light was still green for vehicles. A breathalyzer test returned a negative result. This is all the information released so far.

The Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) rescued the man, who was in critical condition, and transported him to the hospital, where he required intubation. No information regarding his current health status has been provided, video from Megabizarro
