South Korean guard posts are located on the front line between North and South Korea, in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
Since they are situated in the most dangerous area, they have special characteristics that set them apart from typical guard posts.
They consist of bunker-like structures and are staffed by a small number of personnel.

A brutal massacre took place there.

The Yeoncheon 530GP incident involved a shooting attack on a guard post (GP) belonging to the Army’s 28th Division in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), on the central front at Samgo-ri, Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi-do, Korea, in the early morning hours of June 19, 2005.
Eight people were killed, two were wounded, and two survived.
On May 7, 2008, the death sentence was upheld for Private Kim Dong-min, (born August 14, 1989) 20 years old at the time, who was suspected of having fired the shots.

Kim Dong-min threw a grenade at the interior and fired 44 rounds from a K1 rifle, killing six people instantly at the scene.
Kim then went to the gym, where he killed Lieutenant Kim Jong-myung with the rifle.

Deaths: Lt. Kim Jong-myung (26), Jeong Young-chul (21), Jo Jung-woong (21), Park (22), Lee Tae-Ryeon (21), Cha Yoo-chul (21), Kim In-chang (21), Lee Kun-wook (20) corporal.

Injured: Private Kim Yoo-hak (20), and Private Kim Jun-young (20).

The investigation revealed that Private Kim, who was involved in the incident, committed the crime out of resentment over frequent reprimands, insults, and other personal abuse he suffered from his superiors.
The National Assembly's Truth and Reconciliation Subcommittee also concluded that the incident was due to his introverted personality, poor relationships with his co-workers, and insults and reprimands from some of his superiors.

The proposed alternative measures included supplementing GP guard personnel with volunteers, offering them various incentives such as special allowances and vacations, developing proactive incentives for military life, significantly increasing the salaries of enlisted personnel, and improving the enlisted personnel management system.

The Minister of National Defense submitted his resignation following this incident, but it was not accepted. Senior commanders, including corps and division commanders, received only a minor disciplinary sanction: a three-month salary reduction, which drew widespread public criticism.
