The Samashki massacre was a mass killing of Chechen civilians by Russian forces during the First Chechen War. Hundreds of Chechen civilians were killed as a result of a Russian clearing operation and the bombing of the village.[1][2] Most of the victims were shot at close range or killed by grenades thrown into the basements where they were hiding. Others were burned alive or shot as they tried to escape their burning homes. Much of the village was destroyed, and the local school was burned down by Russian forces during their withdrawal.[3] The incident attracted widespread attention both in Russia and abroad.
The March 1996 report of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR) states:
A massacre of more than 100 people, mostly civilians, reportedly occurred between April 7 and 8, 1995, in the village of Samashki, in western Chechnya. According to accounts from 128 eyewitnesses, federal soldiers deliberately and arbitrarily attacked civilians and civilian dwellings in Samashki, shooting residents and burning houses with flamethrowers. The majority of witnesses reported that many OMON soldiers were drunk or under the influence of drugs. They deliberately opened fire or threw grenades into basements where residents, mostly women, the elderly, and children, were hiding.
According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), this was the most notorious civilian massacre of the First Chechen War. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced that approximately 250 civilians had been killed.[4] According to Amnesty International[5] and HRW, more than 250 people were killed, while elders in Samachki stated that up to 300 residents were killed in the attack,The Chechens took their revenge.
