Escondido police officers shot and killed a man armed with a gun Friday morning as the man ran away, firing shots at officers who were attempting to detain him, according to investigators with the San Diego Police Department.



Escondido police were first called at 6:40 a.m. about a man sleeping in a sleeping bag on the porch of a mobile home in the 2500 block of East Valley Parkway, San Diego police said.



After an interaction with the man, two officers began to detain him when he took off running. In his attempt to flee, the man pulled out a gun and began firing multiple rounds at officers, who returned fire striking the man, SDPD said.

The man, identified only as a 48-year-old man from Indiana, was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died, SDPD said. No officers were injured.

SDPD's Homicide detectives took over the investigation, per a county-wide agreement to prevent agencies from investigating their own officer-involved shootings.



During their investigation, they learned Escondido police found the man pushing a motorcycle inside the complex. SDPD said during their initial contact with the man, they learned the man had a felony warrant for a parole violation out of Indiana. No other details were provided.



As police attempted to detain the man, he fled. Meanwhile, he reached into his waistband, "pointed it across his body at the officers, and fired multiple rounds," SDPD said in their initial news release.
