Driver flees after double-decker tourist bus becomes lodged in underpass
Mexico City, Mexico — More than a dozen people were injured when a double decker tourist bus drove under an overpass and sheared off its roof. Mexico City emergency services were on site Sunday after the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) of Mexico City received the report.
The too-tall tourist bus was coming from Toluca, State of Mexico bound for Puebla when it entered the underpass, shearing off its roof. Two sections of a city sign were ripped from their concrete structure as the double-decker bus entered the space.
The bus drove less than half way into the underpass before coming to a stop. Behind the bus at the entrance to the underpass were chunks of concrete, two large sections of a city highway sign and the entire top to the bus.
Traffic was backed up for kilometers while the Fire Department and Civil Protection worked to free the bus from under the Viaducto Miguel Alemán at the Avenue División del Norte intersection.
A total of 16 people (10 women and six men) riding on the top level of the bus were injured after the bus became stuck in the underpass. Medical services, including the Rescue and Medical Emergencies Squadron (ERUM) and Civil Protection (PC), were at the scene Sunday morning.
There were no serious injuries reported. Mexico City police continue to search for the bus driver who fled the scene at the time of the accident.
