April 13th Update:

Both Officer Chase Gordy & Sergeant Rob Holloway remain in the hospital. Officer Gordy is expected to be released from the hospital today.

Aaron Jajuan Shelton & Pier Alexander Shelton are cousins (not brothers).

An autopsy for Pier Shelton will be performed by a GBI Medical Examiner. The autopsy has not been scheduled yet.

Agents are still working to confirm which Shelton was in the passenger seat shooting at officers. The rifle used was an AK47.

April 12, 2021 Update:

Aaron Jajuan Shelton, age 22, of Birmingham, AL has been charged with 5 counts of aggravated assault and 3 counts of aggravated battery. He is being held at the Carroll County Jail.

The deceased has been identified as Pier Alexander Shelton, age 28, of Birmingham, AL.

Carrollton, GA (April 12, 2021) – On Monday, April 12, 2021, at approximately 5:00 A.M., the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Carrollton Police Department and the Georgia State Patrol to investigate an officer involved shooting.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 3:34 A.M., a Georgia State Patrol Trooper initiated a traffic stop on a 2015 Nissan Sentra for speeding at mile marker 10 eastbound on Interstate 20 in Bremen, Georgia. As the trooper approached the rear of the Nissan Sentra, the driver sped off. The trooper engaged in a vehicle pursuit and was able to perform a precision immobilizing technique (PIT) to stop the Nissan Sentra. The driver of the vehicle was able to gain control and proceed. The trooper attempted to initiate a second PIT maneuver when the passenger of the Nissan Sentra leaned out of the front passenger window and began firing at the trooper with a rifle. The trooper’s patrol car was struck and disabled.

The men in the Nissan Sentra continued to flee during the pursuit. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Carrollton Police Department, and Villa Rica Police Department joined the pursuit at Highway 166 and Bankhead Highway in Carrollton, Georgia. During the pursuit, the passenger in the Nissan Sentra continued to shoot at officers, striking Carrollton Police Department Sergeant Rob Holloway. Sergeant Holloway continued the pursuit until he wrecked his patrol vehicle at the intersection of Highway 61 and Highway 166.

The pursuit continued at a high rate of speed until the Nissan Sentra crashed near Ithica Elementary School in Villa Rica. Both men ran from the vehicle, resulting in a search for them. At approximately 5:00 A.M. and 5:30 A.M., the men shot towards officers and Villa Rica Police Officer Chase Gordy returned shots and was shot twice. Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputy John Repetto was also shot at and sustained a gunshot injury.

One man was shot by officers and died on scene while the other man was taken into custody. He is being held at the Carroll County Jail.

Sergeant Holloway and Officer Gordy were transported to Grady Hospital in Atlanta for their injuries while Deputy Repetto was transported, treated and released from Atlanta Medical Center.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation of the officer involved shooting. Once complete, the case file will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for review. The GBI is also investigating the aggravated assault on the police officers.

Channel 2′s Michael Seiden talked to officer Chase Gordy, who is out of the hospital and recovering at home.

Gordy was shot three times: once in the calf, once in the shoulder and once in the stomach.

Gordy, who is 24 and was just sworn in last summer, told Seiden he’s never been in a situation like what unfolded early that morning.

“I didn’t even have to think. My body did everything for me and with there being no cover around, I think everything I did was the best I could do,” Gordy said.

Gordy isn’t allowed to talk about the specifics of what happened because of the ongoing investigation, but he told Seiden he was finishing up his overnight shift with only an hour left until he got home, when all of a sudden things got intense.

Carroll County Sheriff Terry Langley said the incident began as a traffic stop on Interstate 20 in Carroll County by the Georgia State Patrol. Authorities said the suspects were driving more than 100 mph.

When a trooper approached the car, the driver sped off, traveling onto Highway 61. At one point, a GSP trooper attempted a PIT maneuver, but the driver regained control of the car and continued driving.

During the chase, the passenger used a rifle to fire at officers as it went through Carroll County and Villa Rica, authorities said.

Aaron Shelton, 22, of Alabama, was taken into custody. His cousin, 28-year-old Pier Shelton, was killed during the shootout.

Gordy credits his ballistic vest for saving his life when he was shot in the stomach.

“Our department recently got these high-end ballistic vests,” Gordy said. “The ballistic vest I was wearing actually blocked that, so the only injury to come out of that was a broken rib.”

Gordy said another bullet fractured his left scapula, or shoulder bone.

“I can’t really put too much weight on my left arm,” Gordy said. “It doesn’t move. I can’t put weight on it.”

Gordy said he is thinking about the other officers who were hurt.

“Most of the things I’m asking for right now are prayers,” Gordy said. “Not just for me but the other two officers, physically and mentally.”

Channel 2 Action News has been staying in close contact with family and friends of the other victims.

Repetto was shot in the arm and continues to recover at home.

Corporal Jamison Troutt of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office wasn’t hit by gunfire but sustained other injuries during the chase.

“People are showing so much support in the community,” Gordy said. “I probably get 100 messages a day and I try my best to just show my gratitude. I just tell them to keep on praying. We still have a long road ahead of us.”

Gordy said his doctors expect him to make a full recovery, and he already knows what he’s going to do when they give him the all-clear.

“I was in the hospital and the first thing I said was, ‘I want to get back out there,’” Gordy said.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help with Gordy’s recovery expenses.
