The 11-year-old child who set fire to his grandparents' apartment in Patos de Minas on Saturday afternoon (October 14. was angry because she couldn't use her cell phone. According to the girl's grandmother's report, she was punished for researching witchcraft rituals.
Due to the flames, the grandparents had to jump from the window of their apartment, on the 4th floor. The fall was cushioned by mattresses placed on the ground floor of the building by neighbors, at the request of the police.
According to the 70-year-old grandfather's report, he was with his 53-year-old wife in the apartment's bedroom when his granddaughter came in and asked to use her cell phone. The grandmother denied it, reminded the girl of the punishment, and the girl said she would go downstairs to play roller skates.
Upon leaving the room, the child locked the bedroom door from the outside. The elderly man woke up to the smell of smoke and cracking wood, but was unable to open the door and had to break in to get out. However, he encountered fire and smoke in the living room and returned to the bedroom.
Upon seeing the movement of neighbors, the elderly man broke the window's protective net. He helped his wife to jump and then jumped. To the police, the child said he locked the door to his grandparents' room, set the sofa on fire and then went to play roller skating.
The grandfather said that the child lives with them most days of the week and that the cell phone punishment was imposed by the grandmother, who saw “several research on witchcraft rituals” on the device. The elderly man, however, said he could not say whether these articles were linked to the incident on Saturday. According to family members, the girl presents repeated episodes of behavioral changes, such as mood swings.
Civil Police informed the reporter that they will analyze the causes and circumstances of the incident.
