I'm a locomotive engineer (railway driver) and killed a guy (suicide) like 20 years ago, it looked similar to this. He was standing near the tracks... close, but in the clear. At the last second he leaned forward and the front plow split his head open. It was the first time I saw brains. From some angles he looked perfectly normal, just lying there on the ground, but the top of his head was open like a Pac Man and his brain was on the ground a few feet away.

I certainly don't live with any guilt, but I do think about it quite often. It never really did upset me, either. It's unfortunate that he felt so hopeless, but I accept that there was nothing I could do. I actually took pictures of him before the first responders arrived... of his body lying there looking perfectly normal, but then from a different angle seeing the top of his head split open like a coconut, the white bone inside... the pile of brains nearby looking like oatmeal. They were shitty lo-res pictures taken on an early Treo smart phone. Some years later I deleted them but then regretted doing so. I'm not a total psychopath though... I think if I killed an innocent kid or something it would probably haunt me more.

I ran over a bum once, around 2015 I think... he was passed out on the tracks, of course we were going too fast to stop, and we cut off his legs. My conductor walked back, assuming the guy was dead. He found the body, but suddenly the guy sat up, pointed to his newly severed stumps and said, "You cut my goddamn legs off!" ... it scared the living shit out of my poor conductor. I think the guy lived, ambulance arrived and took him away, he never lost consciousness.
