BROOKLYN, N.Y. — An NYPD officer shot and injured a knife-wielding man after he charged at a group of officers in Brooklyn on Thursday — and one officer’s hand was cut in the struggle that ensued, authorities said.
Richard Paris, 57, has since been charged with assault on a police officer, attempted assault, menacing a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the incident, police said.
Authorities said the situation began as an officer was walking on West 8th Street, between Neptune and Surf avenues, around 12:55 p.m. and spotted Paris wearing “thick red gloves,” standing next to an SUV and blocking traffic on the street, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at a news conference.
The officer began to approach Paris, when he noticed he was also armed with two knives, one of which was 16 inches long, Sewell said.
After noticing the officer, Paris “rushed toward him” with one knife raised, so the officer backed away, the commissioner said.
