Depends on where you shoot yourself and with what caliber. You could be killed instantly or you could still be aware of what's going on. If we're talking technically, you don't die instantly in most cases. The thing that kills most people is blood loss. If you can manage shooting the brain stem, that would be instant because it's responsible for breathing and a few other important functions we do automatically. If you want a truly instant death, aim for the heart. I work in forensics and have watched more autopsies than I can count because I find them interesting. I also ask a lot of questions. I've seen enough suicides/ homicides and nearly all of them didn't die instantly. (According to the information gathered.) If you want something painless, freezing to death is pretty peaceful. You go to sleep and never wake up.

Not if you do it right. But, yeah, I probably wouldn't go that route because you have to be precise. A shot to the head will most likely kill you. Technically you'll be alive for a few minutes or so but you'll be completely unaware in most cases. I think that would be my worst fear, shooting myself and ending up a "vegetable".
