Tijuana.- A 27-year-old man lost his life after the vehicle he was driving struck a protective bar in one of the closed lanes of the San Ysidro border crossing, between Mexico and the United States, in Tijuana.

The subject tried to escape after running over several people who were in the sales area of ​​the lanes, one of them was in a wheelchair. In addition, it had hit some cars on the Mexican side.

The vehicle was visibly destroyed in lane 28 marked "All Traffic" a few meters from the line that divides both countries, on the left side of the car booth.

The agents of the Office of Customs and Border Protection of the United States (CBP for its acronym in English) activated the alarms once they detected the suspect, who crashed directly into the metal barrier that was placed meters before the inspection booth .

This is due to the fact that said lane was closed for traffic, the CBP Sector San Diego spokesperson informed PUNTO NORTE .

On the Mexican side, a man in a wheelchair was run over together with a woman who was assisting him, both of whom required a transfer to a hospital by Red Cross paramedics.

Similarly, in the same place, a third person required first aid from rescuers for a leg injury.

Vehicles that were lined up to cross into the United States were damaged after the man collided with them to clear a path, but their crew did not require an ambulance.

At the scene, both elements of the Municipal Police and the State Prosecutor's Office appeared.

However, it will be the authorities of both countries who carry out their own investigations.

PUNTO NORTE contacted the CBP spokesperson in the San Diego sector to obtain a version of this incident, who responded that the incident occurred around 2:00 in the afternoon.

It said the man, who was driving a gray sedan, suffered fatal injuries when he crashed into his vehicle, but no injuries are reported on the US side.

The California Highway Patrol will be in charge of investigating the accident.
